Thinking About Where We Want To Be In Ten Years

How often do you think about your future? Do you simply imagine what life could be like within a decade or do you think about what you can do to get there? For many young people, the expectation of planning that far ahead and making decisions now that can have a major impact on that future might seem like it’s far too much pressure to take on at that age. However, the truth is that what we do now really does impact our career and life choices down the road so it’s worth thinking about.

What Are Your Dreams?
Dreams are often thought of as “pie in the sky” plans that no-one can accomplish. However, the truth is that people do accomplish them. Whatever your dream career is, there are people already doing it and it’s because they started planning and working towards it with all their effort. Dream career tests are a fun way to help you see what direction you might like if you have trouble thinking of one. It’s always a good idea to have a backup plan, of course, but you should start thinking about what your dreams are, and what the path you have to take to get there will look like. It’s never too early to start working towards those dreams.

Where Do You Want to Be?
A lot of people think about not only the career or lifestyle they want but where exactly they want it. Some people want to move from a small town to the big city or want to live by the beach. Some people who are even more ambitious move to other countries entirely. If that’s your plan, you need to think about how you’re going to do it. Some people go overseas for education, while others move for work with the help of things like a tier 1 exceptional talent visa. It’s important to start planning the logistics of a move to another country if it’s a major part of your plan. Understanding the legal limitations and requirements can ensure that you’re not stuck where you are.

What Are You Doing to Make It a Reality?
What we do now impacts our options in the future. If you’re not using your time well or not making decisions that bring you closer to the career and location that you want to be in, then you’re going to have to do that work now. For instance, you need to think about what courses you’re choosing and why you’re choosing them. Do a little research and plot out the personal development map that will bring you to the life you want, one step at a time.

It’s important to remember that even though we can influence the direction of our life, our career, and where we end up through what we do right now, there’s still plenty of time for us to change directions. Try to be optimistic about your goals and keep moving towards them but recognize that it’s never too late to want something different.
